Any idea, philosophy, teaching that has a wonderful purpose of changing the human mentality gets divided by other people into countless number of streams. As is travels from one place to another these are given new names and new forms and if exists for thousands of years no one knows what the truth is anymore. Mankind begins to question was it this or was it that. We take karate for instance. It has a beginning that was divinely inspired, born for a great purpose for changing human beings to a higher level of thinking. Now it seems that some schools have married this ancient teaching to another ancient means of entertainment of the gladiators and has become entertainment. I wonder how many parents would like their children to participate in it to get beat up and broken for the rest of their lives. I know of a person that was kicked so hard on his chin with a front kick that he had to get every part of his head wired up. Karatedo is an art of non combat, beautiful philosophy, great teachings of motivation and tolerance and of brotherhood man and Fatherhood of God.

The great sacrifice that Lord Jesus did for the benefit for man must not be wasted. He walked the path of love, spoke the word of Truth, served for the purpose of peace, gave for the sake of compassion and preached forgiveness. This was one of the greatest Beings that has lived on the very planet we reside. If we can live just one of his teaching his life was not in vain.

Happy Easter

Kancho Deena Naidu.

Many have been taught to fear God. I have learnt from my teacher to love God and to fear our bad actions as they rebound to cause you great grieve. If we live to be above 50 years old we will experience that it all comes back and it is a never ending chain. Many do things out of greed, jealously, anger, hate etc, fame and fortune which cannot hide this or buy their way out. It only 'Goodness' in the form of forgiveness, love and service that can change things. Goodness protects the Good is an old Indian saying.

Kancho Deena Naidu

I know of a well known karate person who spent his entire life standing firm in believing his own ego, greed for powerand money, anger, hate, jealously and ridiculed all those who did not associate with him. He gained all the power he needed in his life, he gained the status he desired, he gained great financial wealth beyond what he needs. The sins of his life came after him as he tried to destroy the goodness of what others were doing. Alas he has to live with this for the remaining years of his life.
My dear fellows of karate, people who read my thoughts of the week, spend your entire life helping your family which includes everyone. Never seek to destroy others because it comes back. See the good in others and do good work. You will be taken care off by God. God has invisible helpers in their billions who are by the side of each one of us evaluating, measuring and calculating the future of our lives, good bad and indifferent.

We have often heard change your character for the better and life soars. With some whatever they touch turns to gold while others everything they touch falls into darkness. This is because of the destiny they created for themselves. It is all to do with the kind of person you are. My teacher informed me, "You can be positive, negative or pure. People who are pure in action do whatever they do as duty. Those who are positive want to earn reward points for what they do and negative people see, hear and feel everything as a gloomy existant. My 4 year old grandson had a incident in his day care where a friend of his did something naughty to him. When his mother heard about it she advised him to defend himself. His response was " Mum I'm a good boy and he is my friend and I want him to be a good boy and I have many good things to teach him to be good.

Kancho Deena Naidu

I believe in Darma which means Goodness. To me nothing else is as important. Many would say how can you be good when bad things happen to you. My answer would be why do you have to drop your level to theirs. Life is too short to be angry, life is too joyous to be mean. Look at all the blessings you have.

Kancho Deena Naidu

Goodness excites everyone. It shines an eternal light when everything else is dark. This is the reason I have renamed Thursday and called it " "Goodness Thursday". More on Goodness Thursday coming up on the web site.

My teacher disliked sports karate immensely, he told me so. One day we were sitting in the dojo and he pointed to the trophies and said that they were dust collectors. He said the real champions are the ones that conquer their own egos. He went on to say if you can do the best you can in whatever you do then you are a champion.

Kancho

Students come through the ranks and get caught up in this world of winners and losers. There can only be one winner in sports karate. But in karate without competitions everyone is a winner as there are no one to compete with. I have taught karate for many decades and only a few understand this.

Kancho

What is ego? It is the individual self that thinks it is separated from everything and everyone else. When we fully understand that we are all part of the whole then there is no more ego.

When I lived in Japan and trained with Gogen Sensei we had many karate foreigners passing through for a day or so. They come along to the college and take a few photos with my teacher and today claim to have trained at the college and even claim to be connected to him. What is more surprising is that some students claim to have a lineage with him. One can only claim this if you trained directly on a personal level with someone. I can claim this because my teacher was Gogen Yamaguchi. My students who train with me can claim this. If one of them leaves the lineage is broken. A lineage is like a chain that is connected links.

New year
Bring joy to another and our joy will be tripled.
Plant a few trees and the planet will have more oxygen and less carbon
Don't be attached to differences and make judgements happiness will increase.
Anger, jealously, hate, greed, lust and pride are the six arms of ego. Our arms are love and service.
We are the image of God the awesome power of goodness.
Our duties are first with family, then society, then the Earth.
Think twice or maybe three times before we make a major decision.

Kancho

We often feel unhappy about life challenges we face. If we measure this to those who are worse of than ourselves then ours are a blessing.

Kancho

2012 is at our doorstep, we are about to open the door and let this new year into our lives. If we can forecast our life in the year to come we would all want it to be full of happiness. The amazing part of this life it can be as there is a path we have to travel in to give us happiness.. That path is called Dharma which means Goodness. This is the image of God that we are created in. My teachers formula that worked for me was to " Let 10 percent of your time be spent on helping others in service work, let 70 percent be spent on doing your duty with family and work commitments or study and 20 per cent be spent on yourself."

Kancho

My teacher said, " Joy is Jesus first, Others next and You last."

Kancho

The air is getting polluted, the ground is being poisoned, the water contaminated and man's mind is getting worse. Who is responsible? Those in power that brought change are responsible. Do we have the power to make changes or is it too late? If we all individually do our duties to make a difference we will have enough collective power to change things for the better.

The Coats that reduce our vibration
We are the embodiments of the most High. We are love incarnate. The frequency of our true selves are over a billion cycles. In our journey we put on a number of coats that reduce our vibes. What are these coats that we carry and where do they come from? The first coat is fear, which is opposite to love. When fear is worn we create separation between ourselves and everything else. The ego or soul sees differences. Once the coat of ego is worn then comes attachment and desire. Then follows anger, hate, pride, lust, jealously and greed. Focus on our true selves called love then all the coats start to fall off and only love remains.

Greed and jealously are the two arms of physical and mental ruin. Selfless service and contentment are the pillars of spiritual success.

Kancho Deena Naidu

There is more to this life than just the physical reality that you experience through your senses. I cannot emphasis more than to tell you what you think is real is just an illusion called Maya. The only reality is that which lies beyond the body and mind of you, me and everything thing else. This my dear students is love in the form of Spirit. This invisible force connects everyone and everything. Focus on this and you will never be unhappy, anything you desire that is selfless you will have and you will be forever protected.

I had a test many years ago by a student and my ego became so small I could not see it. This student become my teacher of a very valuable lesson. From that day I lost what is not me, I lost something that many think is themselves. I am determined to continue on a path of humility as sometimes those whom you guide are the valuable teachers. From that day hence I have become the servant of my students and not their master. I am only the master of myself if I keep the ego away.

World pollution is not just the air the breathe, or the water we drink, it is also with the mind we keep. Bad influences are poisoning the minds of the young. It is the strong detergents of discrimination, discretion and determination that can slowly wash out the pollution from the fabric of youth life.  So essentially human values are very necessary as I believe that we need to guide and help future generations by helping the one or two generations before us.

A teacher made a statement once which some of the students found hard to comprehend. Asked one student to another what does our teacher mean when he said when man gets rid of the animal in him, he becomes human, when the human in man disappears he becomes cosmic and when the cosmic disappears he lives the life of true divinity. Well said sempai ( senior student) to kohai( junior student). It is all to do with the nature of humans. The animal in man is greed and lust, when that leaves, human life moves to higher life of giving. When humans give up ego and attachment, I and mine feeling, they become cosmic which means they move to a higher level of living. However, this life is living in duality. When duality disappears, oneness appears. This life is that of divine. The goal of human life is to shed those things that keep us down spiritually. I thought karate is just physical said the student. Well you have not been on the path of Do long enough, in time as you travel on this journey you will understand the true art.

Belt
Best Effort Little at a Time. In other words don't rush through grades. Knowledge is greater than the colour of our belt.
Kancho

Someone asked the question about our system so here is my answer.
Goshin karate-do has teachers, we do not have instructors. We do not play sport, we study, practice and share the real art of karate-do. Our lineage has began 5000 years, beyond and Including Miyage Sensei, Gogen Sensei. Top priority is character development, then comes physical. Anyone can practice karate, as my teacher said even monkeys. To develop the mind to have reasoning only human can do this. Our task as teachers is Miyage Sensei's teaching " karate-do is defense" , Higaonna Sensei's teachings, "in karate-do ego has no place", karate-do is Budo said Gogen Sensei. Today practicing karate in different parts of the world are good and bad human beings, there is very little reasoning or discrimination between teacher or students. This once sacred art have become an offense tool for many gangsters, trouble makers, criminals why? Simply because in most schools anyone can walk in pay their fees and practice. In our school human values, character development, spiritual training is part of our training. our results are dharmic( goodness and righteousness). In years to come many will hold our system with great respect because because the world gets darker everyday with wickedness. We are on the path of Do, we practice the art, not a game, we practice Budo, physical, mental and spiritual, we practice to eliminate ego not to give it power. we are on the path of everything good for the human self.

No matter how powerful anyone is, they cannot escape the claws of karma. Think careful before you act hurting someone especially those who have guided you to become a better person, filled your mind with knowledge, took care of you when you needed help. Think, say and do bad, you will receive B.A.D. Blistering Attack of Denigration. This law has a boom a rang affect. It will hit you on the head when you least expect it.  A student who he has done bad things in the past asked his teacher, so how does he not suffer the consequence of karma. The teacher said first you have to seek forgiveness from the person you said or did bad things to, then you have to cover your karma with dharma( goodness). Just doing good things is not enough seek the blessings of those you have harmed or forever live in pain.

Energy is matter, energy are thoughts, energy are actions, energy is life, energy is everything you see and do not see. There is not such thing as empty space, empty space does not exist. What we think is empty space is full of energy. Be careful what you think, what you say and what you do as you are transmitting energy that always comes around. You are blessed for good and suffer the consequence of bad. There are no winners and losers, victims and victors, you are the master, the designer, the planner of your own life. if you understand this and follow the law of karma (cause and consequence) and the law of dharma (goodness) you will always have a blessed life. These are the words of my teacher.

Kancho. Deena Naidu

A student asked how do I undo bad that I have done. The teacher answered, what's done is done, but you can change the energy that exists by making it good. First forgive yourself, then write a letter or some form of communication to apologize. Swallow that pride that makes you think you always right, this is the ego talking. If you have harmed a friend who has done you good, a teacher who has guided you to a better life, a neighbor who helped you in times of need, a fellow work friend saying sorry is not a big deal, but not having guts to do what is right is a failure of the spirit. Change the energy, then no more bad energy returns.

Traditional karate is the ideal form for practicing an art that is pure, that has been created for the right reasons. It comes to us from the heart consciousness of those who were responsible for it creation with the purpose of assisting mankind to protect themselves. Karate-do is not a game, it is about developing the karate-ka to fill the sub consciousness with the right information and connect with the super-consciousness. This kind of knowledge goes over the top of many of those who play karate. My wise teacher informed me once, many of the students who come to me want to be good fighters, very few come with the purpose of learning the real art.

Kancho

Think dear ones, said the wise karate master to his students, you have a body that has been provided for your earthy purpose, you have a soul carried for aeons, you have a spirit that is connect to all that is, what do you deeply understand is the main purpose of life and why are you taking this journey.
One student said, I don't know.
The other said, to be happy.
The third said, to love and serve.
The fourth said, to find God.
The fifth said, to find out, who am I
The sixth said, each one has their own purpose and reason.
These are reasons coming from the mind that sees the world, the physical universe, the body, mind as a separate entity, that lives in duality said the Wise One. When you deeply meditate you feel your presence in a void existence. You do not see your body, you go beyond the mind into the super consciousness and feel love. This love is you, this love is everyone, this love is life, this love is nature this love is God. When you feel and really know love you will know your purpose and you will know why you have taken this journey.

On this day we can donate to charity, help some one in need that you heard off that is having difficulties, assist in finding a job for someone in need, take a cake to a retirement village, listen to someone in difficulties, pay the toll for the person behind you etc.

There are many things we can do we do not have to find it, however, I like many believe that we do not have to wait for Goodness Thursday to help some one that are in immediate need of assistance.

The purpose of Human Life as far as I understand is to be happy. The only way to be happy is to create happiness in others. Anything less is no compromise for happiness for yourself. If you bring misery to others you bring misery to yourself. It is a simple karmic law that modern science declare, " Every action has an equal and opposite reaction."

Some western philosophy and all Eastern thought on the topic of spirituality is that all “Energy is One”. Two names used are the Atma and the Paramatma. It is said that everywhere is the atma, collectively it is called paramatma. It is said that within the atma is seen the microcosm and the paramatma is the macrocosm. Both the macro and micro, they say is the same. Today science has come up with “Theory of Everything, The Unified field, The String theory “ etc and is the same information that was known 20, 000 years ago. It seems that we have gone the full circle to get to the same point of understanding.
With this is thought” all energy is One” as it points out to be true, how can we harm others as we are only harming ourselves. A great teacher declared,” We are all one my dear one, be alike to everyone. And then he also said, what you do to others you do to Me. “

I went to the Santana show and I heard this amazing musician say, “ We are all light and love.” Ii explains all.

Humans are blessed with a human intellegence to think within an understanding and view things as it is said "outside the square." If we follow without question means we have not utilised all our resourses, if we think only from an outside view it does give us a complete answer. Using common sense, spiritual sense and interlectual sense always the better way to go when it comes to reasoning.

Kancho

A student asked me about religions and what is the difference. I believe each to their own and when they are ready the truth will be shown. This is not a site to discuss religion however; I would give a brief explanation from my limited observation from study on the topic.
Some Religions were created to increase goodness in man and get humans closer to the Divine.
While others inform man if he believed in God through their means of worship they will be saved and heaven will be assured, if they deny then hell it is forever.
Others inform man that he is not separate from God that he is God on a human journey. Similarly every form of life is God having that form of experience. For instance God is having an animal experience, God is having a vegetation experience, God is having insect experience. With this in their mind they respect every form of life and allow it to exist and co-exist with humans.
Then there are those who say heaven and hell is here and you find it through your actions, so if you take the road of right conduct and persistently search through deep meditation into your consciousness you will find your answers.
Most religions preach Goodness and have the pure intention of helping humans to become better people. Within some religions there are those who believe that they are right and others are wrong, and then there are those who see all religions leading to God on a different journey.
Millions of People have had amazing Divine experiences, like the writer and to follow the path they on. What is also great it that these people with profound experiences is from different religious or spiritual beliefs. My understanding is that these experiences come to anyone in any form of religion or no religion. It is not the religion that influences the experience it is God and only the Divine understands why these experiences happen.

A student asked a master, " You say Master that we must always be happy, how can we be always happy?" "Its easy when you do all your duties with love," replied the master. We focus on things that make us unhappy, said the master. For instance, when you at work forget the politics, forget about the length of time you work, just knuckle down and do your job with love." To find something ideal is hard so turn things around love what you do and happiness will find its way to you." It's all about energy you put the right energy into something and then everything good will find you." So master what if things go bad by unforseen circumstances? asked the student. Well these are passing clouds, these are temporary challenges. It is your view of what happens and your reactions to what happens, remember it always can be worse" said the master. If you keep being positive even if you going through challenges, less and less things of a negative nature comes your way." There is a saying whatever certain people touch turns to gold, it can be the same for you in terms of experiences, just keep working on doing all your duties with love."

when you get upset by what others say about you, you are filled with anger. When you say bad things about others and they hear it, they get angry. Both then continue to do what is considered to be a reverge attack on each other. Does this make a better world - NO. Someone said to me recently that I must be very angry with those who have let me down. My response was that they have not let me down, they have been good to me and choose not to continue this journey with me. It is their choosing and it maybe my blessing. If the parting came later it would have been harder. There will always be those who are meant to be with me or not be till the end. When we were born did we consciously bring anyone with us, when we leave this life do we take anyone with us. The answer is no. we have no power to do this. Only the Divine has the power to do this. I practice non attachment and it is easy for me to let go.

Dreams are dreams, we do this when we sleep or with thoughts we call day dreams. It is an illusion of thoughts. True visionaries’ dreams are different. They manifest something at a future date by putting into action what they have dreamed to happen. A dream can be an illusion or a reality. We make it happen or let it faze away. Change your life by dreaming a better life and you have the power to do it. Success or failure is not up to someone else, it is only up to us as the power of the entire universe is inside you.

Over the news we have heard this week that sports people were expelled from the Commonwealth games for bad behaviour. Others apparently have destroyed property. Here we have people who have trained very hard through their lives to make a success, yet don't seem to have any sense of respect for themselves or property. There are so many incidents of bad behaviour over the past and recent months.
Karate's values such as respect and right conduct are more important than winning and become the best in a physical activity. Traditional karate(non sport)is so much ahead because character comes before karate(Physical activity).
It is about time we stopped and had a hard look at ourselves as humans and start to bring back the old disciplines, respect, values and make this world a better place. Change has to be with everyone of us and it must start now.

The question about karma. Someone asked the question because they felt that there is no such thing as karma. They said this because they see so many people do wrong yet nothing bad happens to them.

My answer :
Firstly,we must not ever hope for people to suffer just allow the course of natural events manifest. We draw onto ourselves the energies of others. This is the reason spiritual masters declare "Don't judge others." Those who would like me to explain further, send me an e-mail, i am happy to respond.

This is how Karma works. Think of this analogy; when a seed is planted, it takes time for it to grow into a plant, it takes time to bear fruit and it takes time for the fruit to ripen. In the same way those who do good or bad actions have planted their seed. Nothing that ever happen goes unnoticed. A great master rightly pointed out as you sow so shall ye reap.

His response was that westerners do not understand and follow Zanchin(proper karate attitude). They, he continued are more interested in short term gains rather than pay more attention to long term returns. He said except for a few they did not have the same discipline, self control and ethically karate behavior and attitude as Japanese students. He summed up by saying that Belts are the first in their minds, second how many trophies they get and how many katas they have learned without practicing it correctly.

Sometimes it is important not to get involved in the problems of others who carry a heavy load of karma. As it is said you can give light to only those who are prepared to accept change and a change of attitude. If they have created their own destiny by finding themselves in deep water without knowing how to swim, they will drag you down like a drowning man, not all of us can be lifesavers.

Kancho

Change only to lead a better life, become a better person today than you were yesterday, and a better role model for those whom you act as a mentor too. This can only be done when we can recognise our faults, otherwise the ego will continue to tell us we are perfect.

Life is far too short to create enemies. life is far too precious to carry grudges. life is a great journey with loads of challenges and we need each other in so many ways to find our way. Keep in good terms with each other and be appreciative of those who cared for you and gave you correct direction. I am amazed that so many of us take things for granted and break relationships at the drop of a hat especially with good and kind people.

a master was telling his class: Anyone can be a black belt, anyone one can call themselves a karate teacher. Have they mastered their own egos? only then you are a true black belt and a teacher. In the old days karate-ka worked hard to become a black belt and a teacher and it was rare to be either. Today many black belts cannot fight their own egos, talk too much and know nothing, win competitions and cannot defend themselves. All too easy and all too useless he said.

Trust is one of the most difficult challenges we face. Besides others trusting us many have difficulties in trusting themselves to do what they say. Look beyond human weakness, close your ears to hearsay and childish gossip and just go by your own experiences. Accept that this is not a perfect world and we are not perfect humans, then you will TRUST more and accept life as it presents itself and be the first to forgive when things do not go as planned. I saw my teacher as a saint, I believed in his way and I believed in him no matter what, as I was never distracted by anyone. You only experience the picture you paint.

Its the thought that counts, so true.
It can work for you or against. Positive thoughts increases your vibration, whereas negative thoughts depletes it. The more you focus on good things such as service to others, love, peace, goodness etc, the better you feel. The feelings of guilt, anger and hate draws away your own vibration and you become mentally worse and irritable.
Think of it like this, you have a counter in your heart and at the start of today you are vibrating at 10,000 beats per second. Each time you have a good thought it increases by 1,000 beats. Each time you have a bad thought it reduces by 2000. If it continues it goes into minus. The best way of getting rid of it is to change your thinking, use music, walk amongst trees and plants or meet and talk to positive people. let your heart counter start tomorrow at 20,000 rather than minus.

For my self, I cannot love martial sport and martial art - like God and Money. Either one or the other each completely different. Some say both complement each other. Traditional arts is real, whereas sport is make believe. I have many examples of Japanese masters informing us the Sport Kata is only made to look beautiful and controlled kumite in Tournaments is for the purpose of winning trophies. In a conversation a senior student, out of concern for young people discussed how negative influence impacts on their lives and respect, discipline and values are disappearing. He then said, "why do you bother to continue to teach values when the peer pressure outside the dojo is far greater." I then said, "whatever I teach will always remain in their minds and it is my duty as a teacher to teach good. If we do nothing then people will have little to choose from, then negative energy will grow at a faster rate. I must do my best to teach good values to the small group I have in the hope that they can influence others to be the same."

Kancho's New Years Message

Years come and go and each year seems to go faster than the last. As each year passes we grow in maturity. Certain experiences present itself as lessons, these are often pushed aside, it repeats itself in different ways until we understand its purpose.

Many great minds have said that this year will be no different from the last, some lessons however, will be different. The Earth School which our planet is sometimes called, forms the platform for learning. The lesson from my teacher is to be happy. He goes on to say that, in truth nothing is negative, everything has a good reason and a purpose. When we look back at our past, many would not want to change anything even the times of suffering, even that has had great lessons.

Be happy, Bless those who curse you and Praise those who help you.

Becoming a Black belt is like moving to a higher class of understanding karate on a much deeper level and each step forward brings you closer to the ultimate Truth. The journey becomes a more interesting journey of learning and discovering. And as you learn you discover how little you know to what there is to learn.

My days at Semon Gakko college in Japan was truly uplifting for me as I learned many things from my great teacher Gogen Sensei. One such lesson was when my teacher was explaining some of the most important aspects of karate-do. I sat in awe of how much he knew and I told him so. He then said to me that what he knows is a just a part of his little finger in comparison to what there is. What humility? I then thought, if that is all he knows then, my knowledge is non existence.

In the nine aspects of karate-do, Awareness, Becoming and Being stand out to be the most important. These three can be applied to life as well. When you become aware that you are not the body and that it is just an instrument in this 3rd dimension plane of existence, we then move on to the second stage of self discovery, this is the becoming stage. Finally through self control, discipline, non attachment etc we reach the final stage called the Being or the I am or Divine stage.

The Japanese have always quietly looked at most forigners as low skill instructors in the art of karate. This is because many have lacked discipline, very impatient - wanted more without first mastering what was taught, grade hungry and did not have Zanchin (correct karate attitude). Over the years things have changed and I must say that we in Goshin kan karate certainly shine out, as one of the leading schools of Zanchin and skill level as one of top schools in the world. I thought this was great to be in our Thoughts of the week.

Fixing a Wrong
We always know for ourselves when we have done something to hurt or offend another person, but don't always know how to fix it when we do. Some try to just ignore it and hope that it will be quickly forgotten and everyone will move on. Most often this doesn't work, and only serves to hurt the person even more.

A good way to fix things properly is to implement what we call the 3 A's:

APOLOGY: Saying your sorry is good, but alone it is merely a word.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Explain as you apologise, what you have done that you are sorry for. If you can't identify what you did wrong, how can you truly be sorry for doing it.
ASSURANCE: Promise to not let it happen again. As we all know, ACTIONS speak louder than words, and keeping this promise is the action that will once again earn back respect and trust.

Love those who hate you, Love those who say unkind things about you and love your enemies. I know of a teacher whose last words to a student was "I love you" after this uncaring, ungrateful, egoistic, greedy and deceitful student had done unimaginable things to bring disrepute to a teacher whose only mission in life was to serve all his students with total affection. Those who understand the laws of cause and consequence (Karma) have a good idea what has happened to the student. Time balances everything. One only harms themselves when they harm others.

In the eastern martial art calling a teacher by his/her title is a great way of showing respect as well as admiration. A true teacher does not become one without making a great effort and self sacriface. I could not even think of addressing my teacher by his first name, never have and never will - that's me. I had to repremand a student of mine on a number of occassions when he would address my teacher by his first name. Although my teacher never demanded it, it was expected that those who practice karate-do would understand this. Its is not about putting a teacher on a pedistal, it about valuing a relationship(teacher/student) and knowing our place in the realm of things without ego getting in the way. Its called humility. Those who truely want to learn the ethical values of traditional methods of DO - make an effort as it is greater than any other way.

Most Japanese karate masters I know have only ever regarded a third Dan to have a title of Sensei. The reason for this is similar to becoming a teacher after high school. One has to develop skills of teaching. In karate, becoming a black belt is like finishing high school, and then it takes between 10 to 15 years from Shodan to Sandan. In Goshin kan, only Sandans are Sensei.

I have learnt from my teacher that this world comprises of five types of people. The lowest end of the scale is the demonic type whose minds are clouded by darkness. Then, there are the ferocious animal type whose minds are tarnished by their own egos of greed, jealously, hate, anger, lust and pride. The third type is in the middle of the scale that are swaying from the qualities below and above themselves. Above this is the angelic type who life is that of service and who have no interest of self gain. Finally above is the Divine type who sees God everywhere and in all things. Recognizing the quality of those, who actions cannot be understood or who make life worth living will bring peace to your own mind. Your understanding of people will deepen. Remember he said, everyone is on a different level of development. The ones at the bottom end of scale will in time come to the top. Do not judge them judge only the actions as bad. They too have a spark of GOD.

Karate-do means the way of Karate. It is three parts:- physical, mental and spiritual. Any separation removes it from karate-do. All three is part of the whole and is of the one. Today instructors are separating the physical from the art and calling it Karate jitsu. This means the mental and spiritual aspects is lost. That is the reason they are instructors and not teachers. Great seers have said that 2009 is going to be a good year for some and not so good for many on the planet. It is going to be a year of uncertainty, fear and lot of hardships. However, we will see love like we may have never seen before in terms of compassion and tolerance. Only when there is great suffering will real love emerge. Those that work hard on themselves to be good and have been helping others, serving their community with love and doing the right things in life will be safe. It has been said that everyone must continue to take care of their families and will get the full benefits of a safer and easier life.

Karate-do is not just kicking, punching, blocking and striking. It is an art to overcome the mind, go beyond fear, eliminate attachments and destroy the ego. Do is 'The Way' of the human spirit towards enlightenment.

I found that in sixties and seventies as I was growing up practicing Karatedo, there were true masters around us who had a sense of pride in their system. Traditional Teachers like Ray Ryan of Budo Kan, Leo Lip Lipinski for Goju kai, Jam Mohan from Zenuki, Stan Smit from Shotokan were just awesome teachers who had pride in their system, respected others and kept to their own. Each school was distinct from each other yet dynamic and no one copied what others are doing, stuck to their own traditional ways. Each system pure in its own right, had their own methods and stuck to it with dignity and pride. Teachers in each system respected teachers of other systems and even admired others and these greats were extremely strong powerful people physically and mentally.

GOSHIN KAN KARATE DO A Traditional Form of Self Defence
Do not promote the ego and give it a weapon- 99% chance someone is going to get hurt. According to this weeks news at the Olympics, apparently a Taekwondo American chased and kicked a referee on the head (I saw the news footage). Years ago in 1976 while I was training in Japan with Gogen Sensei at the Tokyo Dojo, I heard a similar story, a French karate person at the world championship kicked and injured a referee and judges because a decision was made against him. This is the level what sports martial arts have become. I cannot understand, why karate-ka world wide do not understand that sports martial arts develops the spark of the human ego into a flame of 90% of karate enthusiasts, while the traditional arts reduces the ego of 90 % of those coming into the art.

Traditional karate is a gift that teaches discipline, self control, values and every aspect of human goodness. It helps us develop our character and brings out the best in ourselves as human beings. It teaches us "not to be violent". I am not upset by the news. I saw this coming and worse to come if we do not wakeup to what sports martial arts does to the human ego. Very few people that do sports can control their egos. It is dangerous for the average individual who cannot control their ego and to those around them. We are mixing the human ego and an art that can injure and hurt and even kill people. My teacher told me that he made a mistake being one of the people developing karate sport. The intention was for the purpose of goodness, he then saw what it does to the human ego, but it was too late. The monster had been born. I vowed never to go down that path. O'Boy I am glad I did. My students are fortunate that they do not belong in that arena of sadness.
This is an eye opener for teachers, students, parents and everybody that wants to practice a defensive art for their protection. It is this that makes everyone wake up to what is happening. The human being is a Divine being and if the ego is not under control it can turn a good person into a demon. In the east, a teacher is revered as a Guru ( Divine sharer of Truth). These judges and referees are teachers, participating in something that they think is good. The whole intention of sport martial arts is to develop goodwill, but instead it is driving people away form goodness and into bad action if not evil. To kick or assault a teacher is the biggest sin. It is evil. Sadly, the Taekwondo and karate persons have no idea or even an inclination of what is the real purpose of the art. This art called the 108 movements developed into karate and Taekwondo started in India some 5000 years ago. I do hope that we start to think outside the box of temporary glory and do the art for its real purpose; self preservation(Physical), self discipline (mind) and self enlightenment(spirit). In most instances with age, the body weakens both externally and internally causing a build up of ailments. In many cases, slowing down of the mind too creates its own detriment. Many young people who do very little or no exercise seems to complain of different ailments creeping up. Traditional karate is one of the best ways for both body, mind and life. Goshin Kan Karate is one of the best forms of exercise to keep the mind and body very active. The art of karate-do was never created to show off ones abilities or to create attention to oneself by competing with others. It is purely a disciplined, defensive and self enlightening instrument for personal development. This form of self defence which is now known as karate-do was first exposed to the Okinawin’s when a Chinese servant was defending himself against an arrogant, self centred bully of a sumo who was the centre of attention of the town. Today, many have become the sumo and very few practice it quietly and secretly like the Chinese servant.

Modern karate is much like a mushroom he said, growth is overnight ends up soft as sponge, and weaker than paper. Past karate was respected as an art that needed slow steady, stage by stage learning and development, while in many modern karate organizations any technique, especially kata can be taught to any grade. Work hard and do all tests given to you with courage and effort and be proud of your achievements. Remember only 3 in a thousand make black belt. It is said by masters that those who receive honorary grades for political purposes are a shameful way of receiving a karate grade. Some schools give kyu grade students a honorary grade of black belt to run classes so that the karate organization could be bigger in number.
