Higher grades in traditional schools are given to students by their masters for three main reasons which I call the three A's, Ability(physical ability as well as knowledge) Attitude (character and loyality)and Attendance ( regular and being early). Without all three traditional teachers are reluctant to give grades. There is a tendency for teachers to pass their students whose techniques are on the boarder line, however will not move them up if attidude is weak or students are full of ego. To have a good attitude students must, 'Keep the belts on their waist and not let it go to their heads.'

The purpose of karate is self preservation; the essence is the values of truth, love, right conduct etc. This is so because it protects you in time of need in two ways. The first way through character. This means tolerance and good charater protects you. The second way is when ones life is in danger of being seriously hurt or injured, it is then we physically defend. Without these in the art, it does not exist. Added flavouring such as tournaments, sport and so on, to make the art attractive does not do the art any good. It takes away the fundimental truths about the art. It also gives most winners a false sense of security and takes away the confidence of those who lose. Students who first come to learn the art are new can be easily drawn into something that would be detrimental to their lives. Good teachers realise that most people who come to as students know nothing about the art and do so with the prime purpose of learning to protect themselves, develop discipline, good character, respect etc. This is Budo. How many understand Budo? My teacher Gogen Yamaguchi Sensei understood it and taught it, few listened then and even fewer now. Goshin kai through the number of schools it is bringing together will carry this light of truth to many generations to come.

Karate is a Tool for defence. Your mind, through the education it received good or bad, determines its purpose.
