Christmas is a time when we learn to share. It is a time when we express our divine qualities of giving and receiving love. The practice of goodness through this festive season must be carried out throughtout our lives so that we are forever giving love by our words and deeds. May the Divine shine its blessing on each and everyone of you, past and present students and may you continue to live a life of great compassion, unlimited tolerance and total joy. Merry Christmas and a wonderful new Year.

Those who have practiced karate throughout their entire life did not have short term goals. Their study is like a travel into the infinite space of the expanding universe. When karate ka say where to from here, they have either lost their path which usally happen when either the ego has stepped in or their mind was never in the right place or they have done an art with short term goals.

A few moments prior to a boat sinking on a river, a professor was boasting of his worldly achievements. The pilot of the vessel asked him if he could swim, to which he replied he could not. The pilot then said to him, all your worldly achievements are useless if you cannot swim.

When we create a devil in our mind through the energies of ego, lust and greed it sits there like an invited guest and impossible to get rid of it. On the other hand we can welcome goodness such as kindness, love and forgiveness into our hearts, it will throw out the negative monster.

Karate skill is not to thrill or to kill.
But to develop a non violent nature
And act only on Divine Will.

When you compare yourself with others
Your ego takes the drivers seat.

I asked the question to my students‘ what will be your greatest achievement in karate. “
Then came the answers,
1) “to be able to confidently protect myself if need be”,
2) to be able to convince the enemy not to fight.
3) Never get angry in a confronting situation.
And many other great answers, none said to be a Black belt or receive the highest Dan grade.

In my view, Gogen Sensei was an exceptional teacher and my hero, I have never listened to anyone who had adverse things to say about him. Either directly or indirectly, I learnt from him all I know in karate. For that I am forever grateful. He guided me towards being a good person, that in itself is enough, the Physical karate is just a bonus.
