Say no to ego

Master Gogen Yamaguchi a great master of skill, technique and reason said that winning and losing is not important, just participation in the art. This was said to encourage the development of equanimity in our thinking process. In easy terms this means that we must not allow the ego to be involved in our training process. All elders of the art will bear witness to this fact, that who have allowed the ego to have the better of them has had devastating results. So Gogen Sensei had great wisdom in his thinking because I am sure he witnessed many around him suffering greatly because of either their inflated or deflated egos.

In science we learn that in this physical universe there is a law that tells us, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In spirituality, we learn that every action has a reaction greater than itself. Many masters tell us that it is ten times greater.  There is a saying in the Christian Bible that says, as you soe so shall you reap. In other words its like planting a fruit tree and reaping many fruit. So these messages from different sources speak of one universal truth. This makes us understand why it is essential that we need to start from now to never harm anyone but rather assist everyone who need help. In the east there is a saying help ever, hurt never. Whatever we do will most definately come back to us it is all a matter of time. Think good, be good and do good and it is this that will protect you.

There is a fine line between the two purposes of practicing martial arts. The one purpose that some practitioners practice the art, is for the sake of goodness. In other words,to use its methods to protect onself or the lives of others. The other purpose is when those who practice the art use its methods to feel joy in hurting others, maiming and even killing for pleasure. The line that separates the two indicate the quality of the persons practicing the art; one of goodness is Divine while the others of wickedness are demonic.

The word 'Kumite' means to engage in hand techniques. This means to improve ones skills so that our attackers can be subdued. The word 'Tatakau' means to fight. So there is a misconception with many that 'kumite' means to fight. There is nothing in karate that tells us to fight or how to fight. This is an art of defence and not a means of attack. So kumite is about how well you block and not how well you attack. Anyone can attack, only a few can block or subdue their opponent with skill. These skills come from kata. Practicing kata daily improves ones ability to defend, we then put this into practice when we have kumite practice. This is the art of traditional karate, this is practiced by only a few, who are keen on the art of realism.

One of the main purposes of Bushido( the way of warrior) is for the practitioners of the art to have a good name or do something great. The first step of the Bushi(warrior) is to gain strength of character by removing all faults and weaknesses one at a time. This leads the Bushi towards perfection of character as well as the perfection of martial arts.

Some people strive for greatness, while others choose goodness.Hitler chose greatness, while Gandi chose goodness. Hitler will never be forgotten for his wickedness which was created by his own selfishness. This ego later destroyed Him. He hung on to his ego and did all things to please his ego. Gandi on the other hand will be admired and remembered for his goodness. Gandi gave up his ego by working selflessly he did this by letting go and letting God.
